Not far from Kandy, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden, spanning 60 hectares, holds a remarkable variety of plant life.
It counts more than 4,000 plant species, ranging from spices to medicinal plants, and 10,000 tree species, some forming the “Avenue of Palms” or the shaded canopies of “giant Burmese bamboo”, which can reach 40 metres in height and grow a metre a day. There is also a Java fig tree whose roots spread across an area of 1,800 m².
Visitors can also see an orchid collection and a colony of fruit bats hanging from certain trees in broad daylight.
While home to several species from the tropical world, such as the sea coconut or the cannonball tree, Peradeniya Botanical Garden is above all representative of Sri Lanka's flora.
