At the end of the road, silence. Then light: blocks of intensely blue ice, sometimes streaked with volcanic ash, drift slowly across water as smooth as a mirror. Behind them, the glacier tongue, born of the Vatnajökull ice cap, one of the largest in Europe.
This is where icebergs break off the glacier before reaching the ocean. If you’ve opted for a private guide, they’ll explain this phenomenon, its history and the science behind it, while you walk along the shore at the time when the light is at its best.
Either way, there’s no rush: watch, listen to the ice cracking, and let time do its work.
A few kilometres further on, these same icebergs wash up on the black sand beach.
An ephemeral landscape that changes every day. An atmosphere that’s never quite the same twice.
