During mobile safaris, canvas safari tents are set up each evening in a distinct location.
On the food side, all meals are included, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Breakfasts consist of fruit, muesli and granola, toast, yoghurt, cooked eggs and bacon, while lunches offer salads, pizzas, a selection of cheeses and fruit. In the evening, dinner is served by the campfire, under the stars, in three courses!
Soft drinks, local beer, house wine and certain spirits (Gin & Tonic) are included in the luxury safaris; they come at an extra charge in the classic safaris. Water is included.
The tailor-made, private expeditions are offered on a luxury basis. However, there is no electricity at the campsites. Charging phone and camera batteries is therefore not possible; phone networks and Wifi are also non-existent.
The luxury of true disconnection!
Luggage and equipment are transported by the camel caravan. Guests carry only a small backpack and their camera bag. If tired, or simply for the pleasure of it, everyone can enjoy the view and the walking pace from atop the hump of these calm camelids!
Qualified guides and staff drawn from local communities, grazing land made available to herders, school funding... Environmental conservation and support for local populations are intrinsically linked to how Karisia operates, for a perfect harmony between nature and the people of these lands.
Karisia Walking Safaris warmly welcomes families with a real spirit of adventure and a taste for walking. The minimum age for children is 4 to 5 years old.
A chair, table, mirror and drinking water are provided, along with a washbasin under the tent's veranda. Dry toilets (with wooden seat) and “bucket shower” safari shower tents (with hot water) are available to travellers and made private when subscribing to the luxury option.
Comfortable mattresses, down pillows, duvets and linens (bathrobes, towels, etc.) are provided, as are reviving hot water bottles for cooler nights, and efficient solar lamps and headlamps.
Three nights are recommended to make the most of this experience. Each day generally consists of a 4- to 5-hour walk covering roughly 8 to 15 km, depending on participants’ fitness and the terrain crossed.
The early morning hours are favoured to make the most of the cool temperatures. Stops, wildlife- and plant-watching breaks, and a mid-way snack are all included.
Lunch is served on arrival at the camp. The afternoon is then left free to rest, read, wander around camp... or take a dip in a stream!
Samburu, Maasai and Turkana guides are always keen to share their knowledge through traditional activities such as fire-making, spear-throwing and archery, animal track identification, fishing, and even climbing the granite outcrops of the surrounding area! Their knowledge of the flora, fauna and local history will delight visitors of all ages.
