Each chalet has its own private terrace overlooking Karluk Lake. Each chalet has electricity, a full bathroom and wireless internet access.
The maqii (or banya, in Russian) is the centuries-old Alutiiq tradition of taking a relaxing steam bath in the evening to reflect on the day's events. The maqii has a stone floor, cedar benches and is heated by a wood stove. Stones line the outside of the wood stove, onto which water is thrown to produce thick, therapeutic steam.
Bear watching and excursions on Kodiak Island await, among many other activities. No roads or private dwellings on this wilderness land. No jet skis or water skiers. Staying at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center gives you exclusive access to the private property, allowing you to observe bears in their natural environment with minimal human interference.
Bears live in the immediate vicinity of the center year-round. But it is when they move to the shores of Karluk Lake, to feed on the salmon spawning in the tributaries and along the shoreline, that they are most easily observed — generally from mid-August to late September.
