À vivre

Kolmanskop, founded in the early 20th century by German settlers who came to exploit the diamonds discovered in the region, is today one of Namibia's most famous ghost towns. After years of prosperity driven by mining, the town was gradually abandoned from 1954 onwards, as the deposits ran dry and the miners left.
Since then, the Namib Desert has reclaimed its ground, turning Kolmanskop into a striking spectacle where nature is slowly reclaiming human architecture. The houses, their ground floors invaded by sand, have frames and roofs that slowly deteriorate, yet they remain frozen in time, as if their inhabitants had vanished overnight.
Today, Kolmanskop is a unique place to visit, drawing photographers, history enthusiasts and curious travellers, fascinated by the contrast between the golden sand filling the rooms and the furniture, chandeliers and structures still standing — remnants of a bygone era. It is a striking testament to the power of the desert and the human footprint, a place where past and nature meet in an almost surreal atmosphere.
