Spotting an animal in the tropical rainforest of Odzala-Kokoua National Park can prove more difficult than expected, given the density of the vegetation. The skills of an experienced guide, familiar with the behaviour and sounds of the local wildlife, are therefore invaluable.
At Odzala, visitors may encounter African forest elephants, less well known than their savannah counterparts, including the famous “bulls” — the males, whose tusks sometimes nearly touch the ground. Forest buffalo can also be seen, along with various antelope species (bongo, sitatunga, duikers), red river hogs and water chevrotains (also known as fanged deer). Hippopotamuses, more shy, are rare.
Western lowland gorillas are not the only primates observed at Odzala. Other monkeys swing through the trees, such as the striking Colobus guereza, the white-cheeked mangabey, the moustached monkey and others. Central chimpanzees can also occasionally be spotted.
