The journey begins in the morning mist of Chiang Khong, in northern Thailand, crossing the Friendship Bridge that spans the Mekong into Laos. At Huay Xai, after border formalities, a stop for “local colour” at a noodle stall, then a visit to Jom Khao Manirath temple — a haven of spirituality nestled in the vegetation — sets the tone: this journey will be as much about the senses as the spirit.
Shortly after midday, you board the Gypsy, an elegant vessel with clean lines, designed to carry just four passengers. The crew welcomes you with discreet grace; time seems to stand still.
Lunch on board as the boat glides slowly towards Ban Houay Norkhom, a Hmong village perched in the heart of the hills. Traditional music, open smiles, and first exchanges with the Lao population. In the evening, Gypsy anchors off a sandbank at Ban Pak Sith. On deck, drinks under the stars, a gourmet dinner, and an open bar.
