Franz Josef Land remains largely unknown. Stretching to beyond 81°50' north latitude and covering more than 16,000 km2, this archipelago was off-limits during the Soviet era for obvious strategic reasons. It opened to tightly controlled tourism after the fall of the USSR in 1990. Since the creation of a nature reserve in 1994, followed by the Russian Arctic National Park, authorities have limited the number of vessels permitted to enter the territory.
