The Drakensberg, which runs along Lesotho's eastern border, is South Africa's longest and highest mountain range. Rising to 3,482 metres, it stretches for nearly a thousand kilometres and ranks among South Africa's most striking landscapes. Let yourself be struck by its vastness and wild panoramas. Here, nature takes over and leaves you breathless.
Its jagged peaks earned it the name “barrier of spears” in Zulu, later becoming “dragon mountain” in Afrikaans. The best-known spot in the range is the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, 5 kilometres long and over 1,000 metres high, from which the Tugela River plunges.
The mountain range holds rich biodiversity, from small highland mammals to leopards and caracals, as well as bearded vultures and black eagles — just a few representatives among the dozens of mammal and hundreds of bird species found here.
Also to be seen are between 35,000 and 40,000 San rock engravings, testimony to an ancient indigenous culture, just one of the many activities possible on site.
