Medellín, sitting at 1,500 metres above sea level, is Colombia's second city and something of a turnaround story. Visionary social policies by its mayor transformed a city once overrun by drug violence into a model metropolis. Medellín is regarded by many as an innovative hub for business, tourism and culture. Numerous public parks filled with art sit at the heart of the city's transformation. The voluptuous sculptures of Fernando Botero, a native of the city, are displayed on Plaza Botero. Nearby, the Museo de Antioquia houses paintings by Botero and Picasso. Close by, families flock to the Museo de Arte Moderno and Parque Explora, with its interactive science exhibits and world-class aquarium, while younger crowds head to Parque Lleras, the epicentre of the city's upscale nightlife.
