À vivre

Sri Lanka is a small paradise for nature lovers, and those passionate about marine mammals won’t be disappointed either, as whales, dolphins and other cetaceans cruise off the Sri Lankan coast throughout the year.
The former “Ceylon” is an ideal destination for observing these animals: the climate differs from one coast to another, making it possible to spot dolphins and whales year-round.

The three main viewing spots are Mirissa in the south, Trincomalee in the east, and Kalpitiya, north of Colombo. Each of these destinations has its own character and suits different kinds of travellers. Mirissa, the touristy one, is not one we sell, while Kalpitiya, more authentic and wild, offers those seeking relaxation away from the southern beaches the chance to set out on small boats to approach dolphins or observe whales depending on the season. Trincomalee, dormant for most of the year, comes alive between May and October for travellers dreaming of white sand and coconut palms, who can also board a catamaran to watch whales.

Mirissa
From December to April, set out on an excursion off Mirissa to observe the whales travelling along the Sri Lankan coast during their migration between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. As with everything in Sri Lanka, observing these giants of the sea takes some effort, but what a privilege to be close to these mammals in their natural habitat! You will likely also encounter a few dolphin pods during the crossing. Prepare for a memorable experience.

Trincomalee
From April to October, whales roam the waters on the other side of the island, off Trincomalee. A good way to observe them is aboard a catamaran, allowing you to approach quietly for a close view. This experience is unique, offering the chance to head out to sea and take in the vastness of the Indian Ocean and its inhabitants in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Kalpitiya
From November to March, admire up to a thousand cetaceans at once — a remarkable moment that will stay with you for years. Little known to tourists but renowned for kitesurfing and boat excursions to observe whales or dolphins, Kalpitiya remains a wild destination, delighting adventurers craving authenticity as much as children dreaming of dolphins.
