Skaftafell National Park is surrounded by three glacier tongues and a glacier, Öræfajökull, home to the country's highest peak, the Hvannadalshnjúkur volcano, at 2,119 m. Because of this surrounding ice, only 13% of the park's 1,700 km² — the second largest in the country — lies outside the glaciers.
The area is above all a paradise for hikers, who can find a number of trails covering themes as varied as can be, always set against an Icelandic backdrop: a waterfall framed by basalt columns, glacier tongues, birch forest, black sand beaches, volcanoes, among others.
If you enjoy walking, Skaftafell will not disappoint.
