The Lençóis Maranhenses are without doubt one of Brazil's most spectacular natural sites. A national park was created in 1981 to protect this unique site, which encompasses several biotopes — from marine habitat to forest, by way of mangrove, rivers, and of course a vast expanse of dunes and saltwater lagoons.
The best season to see these lagoons full of water is from July to September, when a striking spectacle of colours unfolds.
