Volcanoes National Park forms a natural border between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As its name suggests, it is home to 9 volcanoes, three of them active, and protects half of the world's remaining population of mountain gorillas.
It was in this mountain range that renowned primatologist Dian Fossey carried out her work, including writing her famous book “Gorillas in the Mist”. She is buried here today, alongside Digit, her favourite gorilla. The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project is based here, dedicated to the conservation of this critically endangered species. Today, you can approach one of the park's eleven gorilla families, whether a 150-kilogram male or a female watching over her young as they play around you. The park is also known for its golden monkeys, which you can track instead if you're not drawn to elephants, buffalo, wild boar, bushpigs, colobus monkeys or antelopes.
