The Perito Moreno Glacier is a natural wonder and one of the must-see sites in the region! Located in southwestern Argentina, at the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, this massive glacier with its deep blue crevasses stretches about 30 km long and 5 km wide, ending its course in Lake Argentino. It is a constantly shifting glacier, advancing roughly 2 metres a day and losing an equal amount of ice into the lake each day. At its deepest point, it is said to be 700 metres thick!
The name “Perito Moreno” (“Perito” meaning “Expert”) honors the Argentine naturalist and explorer Francisco Pascacio Moreno, who studied the region in the 19th century.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is easily visited, whether by road or by boat. It is reportedly one of the few glaciers not currently retreating due to climate change.
Many activities can be enjoyed at the glacier or in its surroundings. There is, of course, hiking and trekking, but visitors can also take a boat out on the lake, approach the glacier by kayak, go horseback riding, try fly fishing in nearby rivers, or visit the region's noteworthy museums.
