Thanks to its tropical climate, diving is possible year-round at Malpelo.
January to May is considered the dry season. During these months, you’ll generally enjoy sunny weather with rougher seas than usual. Shallow thermoclines bring colder water, averaging between 59°F and 68°F (15°C to 20°C). Visibility is also reduced by the high concentration of plankton. If you want to see hammerhead sharks, the best time to dive at Malpelo is between January and May. It’s also the ideal time to encounter bull sharks.
The rainy season, on the other hand, runs from June to December. Visibility improves during these months and you’ll find calmer seas, deeper thermoclines and warmer water with temperatures between 78°F and 82°F (26°C to 28°C). Divers may spot silky sharks (from May to July), as well as whale sharks during the rainy season (from July to September).
