This is a shrub around 2 m tall that can reach up to 9 m, with light grey bark and scale-like leaves. Small yellow flowers bloom between April and June. The fruit, dark green utricles, appear in September and contain black seeds.

It has deep, succulent roots that allow it to thrive in arid, saline or sandy environments.
