The Ciénaga de Zapata nature park was not only the setting for the famous Bay of Pigs battle — it was above all Fidel Castro's first environmental project, launched in the wake of Cuba's Revolución. This is why he chose to spend Christmas Eve 1959 with the region's charcoal burners, a year after the Triunfo, to take stock of progress. Today, the park still reveals its riches through its inhabitants, keepers of a strong tradition. Along the woodland trails, the hike brings encounters with migratory birds and a rich, well-preserved marine flora and fauna.
