À vivre

In recent years, a number of Emberá villages have settled downstream from their communities of origin. These indigenous people realised that ecotourism would allow them to preserve their customs and way of life while integrating into the modern world. They moved closer, knowing that not everyone has the time to visit them in the distant Darién. The day begins with a dugout canoe ride along the river to reach the village of your choice. On arrival, near the community's jetty, the men welcome you with music while the women greet you.
The village chief gathers visitors in the large communal hut, thanks them for spending the day with the community and gives a short presentation of the village. He will also speak about their customs, way of life and traditional crafts, and answer any questions you may have on particular topics. Over the course of the day, you'll be offered a number of activities, including:
A walk along ecological trails, guided by the village healer-herbalist, who will show you the plants commonly used in traditional medicine on this short, pleasant walk.
A jagüa tattoo session (made from the juice of a local fruit) lets you sport, if you wish, a striking tribal design for about a week.
You can also watch and take part in traditional dances to the sound of flutes and drums.
