Certain marshy areas of Odzala-Kokoua National Park are among the few places in Africa where large predators are absent, making it possible to explore streams and marshes safely. This grants easy access to some of the park’s most beautiful areas, offering a close-up view of its exceptional biodiversity, so different from that of southern Africa.

In Odzala’s “bais”, a kind of salt clearing, or in the adjoining open areas, one weaves between herds of forest buffalo or bushpigs grazing peacefully, apparently little troubled by the few hyenas prowling nearby. In the wooded areas, with a bit of luck, one may come across bongo antelopes — large, graceful striped antelopes — or bushbuck. In the trees, local primates — black-and-white colobus, guereza colobus or guenons — watch visitors with curiosity.

Around the Lekoli River, it is not uncommon to encounter a few elephants, seemingly unbothered by the vultures circling overhead in search of their next meal. Hippopotamuses, crocodiles and servals are also sometimes spotted.
