Past valleys, forests, marshes and mangroves, the Lekoli River winds its way through Odzala-Kokoua National Park.
Drifting slowly downstream, one feels almost insignificant, especially when passing through a mangrove whose treetops rise far above the kayak. Among the leaves, one can sometimes make out a few primates and birds, such as forest ducks or local kingfishers.
Suddenly, the large bushes along the bank begin to rustle, until, fortunately, they reveal not a big cat, but an elephant coming to drink.
Hippopotamus occur at low densities in the Lekoli River, and servals are occasionally spotted in the savannah areas. Crocodiles are represented by two harmless species, the African slender-snouted crocodile and the African dwarf crocodile.
