This excursion takes you across the Chilean Altiplano (“high plain”), where vast, open expanses unfold before you. The most famous and largest Chilean salar (“salt flat”) is without question the Salar de Atacama, located within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, with the Láscar volcano as a backdrop. But the Atacama's other salt flats can surprise too, such as Aguas Calientes with its mesmerising turquoise hue.
Along the way, you'll pass through a range of landscapes, from the starkest desert to small oases and mountain scenery: this inhospitable terrain is mainly frequented by ducks, Chilean flamingos and llamas, your companions along the route.
Don't miss the sunset under any circumstances: in the fading light, the sky's reddish palette reflects off the paler ground and the water, creating striking combinations of colour.
