The Maya archaeological site of Muyil, located in the northern part of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, served in ancient Maya times as a trading point between the Caribbean Sea and the mainland. Muyil is an ideal spot to take in spectacular views of lagoons and jungle, with striking Maya temples such as “El Castillo”, which stands 17 metres tall. We will learn about the goals of the “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB) programme, as well as the ecology of the jungle and wetlands and how the different ecosystems, fauna and flora are connected.
From the archaeological site, we will follow an ecological trail to learn about the area’s most significant trees as well as its water points (small cenotes). We will climb a wooden tower to Sian Ka'an’s highest observation point to take in the lush vegetation and freshwater wetlands.
On reaching the Muyil lagoon, we will have a light vegetarian lunch before boarding the boat. We will cross two lagoons connected by a canal that has already been in use for several centuries!
Xlapak is the name of the structure built at the start of a river, and it also marks the beginning of a unique, unforgettable experience in which we will float in crystal-clear waters wearing life jackets. We will drift between mangroves and epiphytic plants such as orchids and bromeliads for around 30 minutes, listening to birdsong and the wind moving through the trees.
After the floating experience, we will walk back along a wooden walkway to find our boat, which will take us back to the mainland.
