À vivre

If, for a moment, you can tear your gaze away from the mountain peaks, the icebergs and all the possibilities for adventure, you'll realise you're standing in Tasiilaq, looking out over King Oscar's Harbour in East Greenland, about a hundred kilometres south of the Arctic Circle.

Around you lies a town which, despite having only 2,000 inhabitants, is the starting point for a wealth of summer adventures on foot, by kayak, by boat or in the air. Then come the winter activities — dog sledding, skiing, heli-skiing and snowmobiling.

Everything seems a little bigger in Tasiilaq. The mountains, the distances, the adventures and the challenges loom large and call out to you, summer and winter alike.

Two or three supply ships reach Tasiilaq each year, greeted like the messiah. The first arrives in early July, the last departs in mid-October. People head out to sea in their own boats to meet the supply ship. Three cannon shots are then fired to welcome the ship and its fresh provisions. Part of the local population heads down to the harbour to greet it. Fruit and vegetables come off the ship first — then the sweets!
