À vivre

Ushuaïa, capital of the Tierra del Fuego province, is the southernmost city in the world. Its name, derived from the indigenous Yagan language, is made up of the words “ush” (“at the bottom”) and “wuaia” (“bay”). Once a penal colony, the city experienced a demographic boom driven by tourism.

Located at the border between the Beagle Channel and the mountains facing the bay, the city stands out for its distinctive landscape. Despite a relatively cold and damp climate, it can see up to 18 hours of daylight between October and March. It is home to the End of the World Museum and a cold-water diving center.

In the surrounding area, Tierra del Fuego National Park, connected to the city by the End of the World Train, as well as the Darwin Range and the End of the World Lighthouse, are popular with travelers. To the north lies Cerro Castor, the southernmost ski resort in the world.
The city is also a departure point for numerous Antarctic cruises.
