À vivre

Under the morning sun, as heat begins to shimmer on the ochre rock, the Valley of the Kings reveals itself in full solemnity. This is not merely an archaeological site, but a dizzying descent into the mysteries of the afterlife as conceived by the ancient Egyptians. Located west of Luxor, this austere and majestic desert valley was chosen by the pharaohs of the New Kingdom to have their tombs carved away from prying eyes and tomb robbers.

The visit begins on foot or aboard a small electric train, and almost immediately, the atmosphere of the place takes hold. Stepping into a tomb, the temperature drops, the silence grows denser. The painted walls tell mythological tales, scenes of judgment, sacred rituals. It is like opening the private journal of a king, meant for eternity.

Among the tombs open to the public, some are simply astonishing for the richness of their frescoes and their depth. But it is the tomb of Tutankhamun, modest as it is, that stirs the most emotion: it was here that the most famous treasure of ancient Egypt was discovered intact in 1922.

Walking through this valley, one feels with every step the weight of history, the fragility of time, and the grandeur of a civilization obsessed with eternity. A fascinating, almost unreal visit, one that leaves a lasting impression of a colossal temple and a bygone grandeur.
