Okonjima is the birthplace of AfriCat, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of threatened predators in their natural habitat, with a particular focus on protecting cheetahs, leopards and numerous other carnivores.
Since its founding, AfriCat has evolved considerably: the organisation has come to recognise the importance of education and of actively involving local communities, to secure genuine, lasting support for its conservation projects.
At the same time, scientific research and the rehabilitation of injured or distressed animals are now central to its mission, ensuring the long-term survival of Namibia’s large cats.
Visiting Okonjima offers the privilege of observing these predators up close and gaining a better understanding of the programmes in place to protect them. A unique opportunity to admire these fascinating “big cats”, as majestic as they are fragile, yet so closely related to our domestic felines.
