At just 33.7 km², Mgahinga National Park is Uganda's smallest national park. Located in the southwest of the country, it covers the northern slopes of the three northernmost volcanoes of the Virunga range: Muhavura (4,127 m), Gahinga (3,474 m) and Sabinyo (3,645 m).
Despite its modest size, Mgahinga offers remarkable diversity. It is one of the few places where both critically endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys — a rare species endemic to the Virunga forests — can be observed. Together with Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it forms one of Uganda's two gorilla sanctuaries.
Beyond its exceptional wildlife and striking volcanic landscapes, Mgahinga holds strong cultural significance. It is the ancestral territory of the Batwa, the “first people of the forest”, who continue to pass on their unique knowledge of this environment.
