Galle
Here, the magic of the past meets the present, in a timeless setting.
Like the city that houses it, the Merchant embodies a living blend of history, spanning from the 17th century to the present day. Parts of the building itself have evolved over the centuries, from a marketplace in the Dutch era, with its traditional red clay-tiled roof from Sri Lanka, to a government office, and then to an archaeologically protected property within Galle Fort. Today, the hotel's refined interiors skilfully combine timeless elegance with contemporary comfort, inviting guests on a graceful journey through the ages.
Located on one of Galle Fort's most prestigious streets — Pedlar's Street, lined with shops and cafés — the Merchant is an ideal starting point for exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site. The Merchant evokes the many moods of Galle and embodies the city's relaxed way of life and aura.
Intimate service and hospitality offer a discreet, individual approach that says “no matter where you come from, at the Merchant, you will always be welcomed”.
With dishes that celebrate the region's rich flavours and natural abundance, dining at 1710 is a feast for all five senses. From the indoor restaurant to the open-air dining area, you can savour local delights as well as a range of international cuisines, all with the Merchant's own touch.
At 1710, the chef takes pride in showcasing local culinary flavours and evoking an authentic “back to basics” experience. Signature dishes infused with distinctive flavours also include the renowned Galle Biryani — a mixed rice dish originating from the city's Arab settlers, which has evolved to suit local tastes and even include an excellent buffalo curd.
All dishes are prepared with local herbs and seasonal fruit and vegetables to ensure a rich immersion in Galle's culinary culture.
You can choose between a private villa or rooms featuring a modern, functional décor with an inspiring spirit drawn from the very essence of Galle.
The hotel offers 14 rooms on its upper floors with a range of luxury amenities, some with views over the church and tower. Each room has a shared balcony separated by wooden panels and is ideal for friends, couples or solo travellers.
The private villa, which can accommodate 4 adults and 2 children, is just a short walk from the main hotel.
The villa consists of 3 bedrooms and a separate indoor living space. It is ideal for a group of friends or a family.
A multisensory experience awaits in an ocean-inspired décor of neutral and blue tones.
After a day spent exploring Galle Fort, return to the hotel and sleep in your luxurious bedding.
Enjoy your morning tea while taking in the courtyard or the villa, as the warm summer breeze ruffles your hair.
