Ecuador

The world's greatest biodiversity

Tailor-made journey to Ecuador

Ecuador is an extraordinary country.
It holds the world's greatest biodiversity, both animal and plant, relative to its size of 256,000 km². More than 6,000 species of vascular plants have been recorded there, 3,500 orchids, and in some places more than 300 tree species per hectare.
Its birdlife is rich with 1,655 species, including an astonishing number of hummingbirds and tanagers.

When people talk about a trip to Ecuador, the Galápagos immediately come to mind.
But the mainland holds treasures that would be unforgivable to overlook: the Andes, home to the Andean bear and the cock-of-the-rock; the Ecuadorian Amazon, which shelters more than 550 bird species, 11 monkey species, and the giant otter. There's also Isla de la Plata which, located two hours from Puerto Lopez, allows visitors to observe the spectacular Galápagos albatross, the Nazca booby, colonies of blue-footed boobies, and, depending on the season, humpback whales breeding in the waters around the island.
A country of a thousand facets, each as spectacular as the next.
An immersion into a world where nature is ever-present.

Budget to plan for

It all depends on the formula chosen: with or without the Galápagos? A Galápagos cruise can be a journey in its own right. We select small-capacity boats. For an 8-day first-category cruise, budget from €5,500 / person departing from France, including a stopover in Quito.
For an itinerant journey covering the Andes and the Amazon over 14 days, budget from €5,000 / person.
For a journey through exceptional accommodations over about twelve days, budget from €10,000 / person.

Drawback

The gold rush.
In eastern Ecuador, Yasuní National Park spans more than 10,000 km² of rainforest. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, it is home to some of the richest nature on Earth. Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, and butterflies, along with thousands of rare plant and tree specimens, thrive in this part of the Amazon. The reserve is also the territory of the Tagaeri and Taromenane, native peoples who live there in voluntary isolation.
But this green paradise, untouched by pollution, sits atop vast oil reserves. The former president had proposed a deal to the international community: leave the deposits found within the park untouched in exchange for compensation paid by the rest of the planet. After years of negotiation and a lack of commitment from partners, drilling began in the park — a death foretold.
