Equateur
11 days / 9 nights
Your adventure begins in Quito, known for its almost intact Spanish colonial centre, its palaces and religious buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The city offers a remarkable example of baroque art, a fusion of indigenous and European artistic traditions.
After the colonial splendour of Quito, you explore the Ecuadorian Amazon, a realm of biodiversity and home to the Kichwa people, keepers of the forest’s secrets. You board the Anakonda, an ultra-comfortable hotel boat, for an 8-day cruise along the Napo River to Yasuni National Park, on the Peruvian border.
QUITO
Quito is the starting point of your journey. Founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city at 2,850 m altitude, Ecuador’s capital has an exceptionally well-preserved historic centre.
You will stay in a beautiful colonial house overlooking Plaza San Francisco.
BOARDING THE ANAKONDA
After a short 30-minute flight from Quito to the Amazonian town of Coca, you board a motorised canoe for a 1.5-hour journey along the Rio Napo, the main tributary of the Amazon. You reach the Anakonda Amazon Cruises, your elegantly designed hotel boat. The suites are spacious and comfortable, with floor-to-ceiling windows; the common areas are generous, and the observation deck offers a sweeping 360° view over the primary rainforest.
CRUISING AND EXPLORING THE AMAZON
Navigation and exploration of Yasuni National Park. Each day, you set out in a rowing canoe to explore this reserve, home to one of the greatest diversities of bird species in the world. Along with your naturalist guide, the programme includes daytime and nighttime observation walks in the forest, as well as canoe excursions. You will see parrots on the clay cliffs of the Salières, noisy primates, several species of reptiles and amphibians, black caimans and Amazon pink river dolphins. A 35-metre-high observation tower offers a sweeping view over the Amazon rainforest canopy, where you can spot groups of tanagers. On Anangu Lagoon, you will observe giant otters and Amazon kingfishers.
