Tailor-made journey to Alaska

Alaska is a haven for those seeking a genuine adventure amid breathtaking landscapes.

With glaciers that calve icebergs, volcanoes that have carved lunar valleys, and mountains still rising skyward, the region never fails to captivate even the most demanding travellers.

Specialists estimate that this territory is home to around a thousand animal species, including 115 mammals and 400 birds. Like Africa, Alaska claims its own “Big Five”. Here you’ll find the iconic grizzly, as well as caribou, moose, wolf and Dall sheep. Denali National Park, for instance, is where you can observe this rich and varied wildlife. Or Kodiak Island, an iconic spot for photographing the Kodiak bear.

In summer, days are almost continuous, and the light is mesmerising over the ice fields of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
You can also choose to cruise the Kenai Fjords, or further east, along the coast through the Inside Passage towards the Yukon. These are deeply naturalist cruises, where you may cross paths with whales and orcas — remarkable experiences for discovering glaciers and photographing the occasional wandering bear along a coastline untouched by human presence.
Wait for September: nature dons a palette of ruby and gold, before the deep cold blankets this extreme territory in white — opening the way to a different kind of winter adventure. Quite out of the ordinary!

Alaska truly lives up to its name, “The Last Frontier”.

Budget to plan for

When it comes to the question of budget for Alaska, you’re no longer talking about a price range, but a whole spectrum: the possibilities of this territory are such that you can easily envisage trips ranging from €5,000 to €25,000 per person for the same length of stay.
It all depends on the conditions in which you travel: Alaska is a vibrant, living land to be explored with all five senses. You can experience it from the air, on the road, at sea or on rails — and of course combine these modes of exploration within a single trip.
As for accommodation, you’ll naturally find standard hotel chains in the larger towns, as well as motels, inns and B&Bs.
If you have the inclination and the budget, you can stay in one of the remarkable lodges set at the heart of a national park: accessible only by floatplane or private boat, off the beaten track, tucked away in wild, pristine nature. Picture a rustic wooden building, comfortable yet far removed from modern life, with no road access but every meal and activity included. It’s more an authentic experience than a luxurious one — but isn’t solitude the real luxury these days? To experience it, budget for €1,500 to €2,000 per night per person.

Expert advice

Alaska is far away: a 10-hour time difference and at least 18 to 20 hours to reach your destination (there are no direct flights from France). It would be a shame to make such a journey and only spend a week there.
Alaska is vast and isolated: a territory three times the size of France, yet with a population 90 times smaller. Not everything is accessible, and yet there is so much to see! We recommend staying at least 10 to 15 days for a first discovery of the must-sees of the 49th American state on a self-drive tour (Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks and Kenai Fjords).
If you have the opportunity to travel longer, take advantage of it to explore more fully this land rich in history and nature. You can, for instance, save travel time by taking domestic flights, allowing you to visit more regions and make the most of your trip.
If you wish to experience a lodge tucked away at the heart of a national park, bear in mind that it will inevitably be hard to reach, and that you’ll need to allow time to appreciate it properly. Most lodges, moreover, only accept stays of a minimum of 3 nights — something to factor into your itinerary!
