The spirit of the journey

This stay in Sainte Marie can be arranged as part of a tailor-made discovery tour of Madagascar.
It's a travel extension that lets you enjoy the superb beaches of this garden island with its lush vegetation.

Sainte Marie is a wonderful, authentic tropical island just off Madagascar's east coast.
A vast coconut grove opens onto a white sand beach and the calm waters of the Indian Ocean.
But above all, Sainte Marie Island is renowned as a site for observing humpback whales — a remarkable experience that stays with you.

You can stay at Princesse Bora Lodge & Spa or at Libertalia, a small, charming lodge nearby.

Travel extension to Sainte-Marie, departing from Antananarivo

SAINTE MARIE ISLAND
From July to late September, Sainte Marie serves as a base for scientific expeditions to observe and study whales.
These giant mammals migrate from Antarctica, coming to breed and give birth in the waters off Sainte-Marie Island every winter: the climate here is one that females seem to find ideal for raising their calves.
They leave once their calves are ready to withstand the cold of the southern ocean.
It’s a fascinating sight when they leap out of the water while playing with their young.
They measure up to 18 metres long, weigh up to 30 tonnes, and feed on marine algae.

In this example, you will spend 3 nights at the 4-star Princesse Bora Lodge, with 3 boat trips to observe humpback whales.

A charming 3-star hotel option is also available, depending on your budget.
