Arrival by air in Puerto Maldonado, gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. You are welcomed by the lodge team. It takes an hour by road to reach the Tambopata River, where you board for a roughly 2.5-hour journey into the heart of primary rainforest.

First night at Refugio before reaching, the following day after 4.5 hours on the river, the Tambopata Research Center.
Tambopata Research Center is the most remote lodge, the one most deeply embedded in the Amazon rainforest, benefiting from an exceptional location just 500 m from the largest macaw clay lick. Each day at dawn, witness one of the great spectacles of the animal world: the largest “colpa” in Tambopata, visited by hundreds of macaws and thousands of parrots. Up to 15 species can be seen together there. A genuine ritual of variable length, depending on whether a bird of prey is drawn to this multicoloured gathering.

Les Colpas de Tembopata

The colpas or claylicks (“clay licks”) of Tambopata are, along with Manu, one of the best sites in the world for observing macaws, parrots and other parakeets that come every day to lick or eat the clay, which appears to be essential to their digestive balance.
At this site, you can observe and photograph more than 6 species of macaws and several species of parrots and other parakeets.
