New Zealand journey: heading north

Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customisable

Country

Nouvelle-Zélande

Suggested duration

3 days / 2 nights

The spirit of the journey

Pushing all the way to the very tip of the North Island gives a different dimension to the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Cape Reinga is a sacred place for Māori. According to tradition, it is from here that the souls of the dead depart for Hawaiki, their ancestral homeland. It is also here that you can take the time to watch the remarkable meeting of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, in turquoise waters framed by striking cliffs.
On the way to the Cape, you will pass through the Bay of Islands, a site held dear by New Zealanders — a vast bay made up of 144 islands, offering some of the finest seascapes in the world, alongside towns with a distinctly Victorian atmosphere.

This journey through the richness of the North, far removed from everyday scenery, will remain a vivid memory of natural wonders.
To be savoured without restraint.

AUCKLAND
Nicknamed the “City of Sails”, Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city (1 million inhabitants, a third of the country’s population). Quality of life here is unmatched. Auckland also gained international recognition hosting the America’s Cup in 1999 and 2003. Set between two major harbours, the city sits on 48 dormant volcanoes and serves as a crossroads of cultures from Polynesia, Asia, England and Eastern Europe.

Collection of your rental vehicle at the airport or from a depot in town.

Enjoy the sea and its various attractions, or appreciate the sophistication of a major city. If time allows, explore the city, its volcanic past and its islands. Walk through Waitakere Forest or climb one of Auckland’s volcanic domes. Take the ferry from the harbour near the city centre to Waiheke Island or Rangitoto, with its dormant volcano — these are just some of the options we can arrange for you, and there is much more besides.

BAY OF ISLANDS
Crossing Auckland’s Harbour Bridge, you set off north towards the Bay of Islands. Enjoy small provincial towns, native forest, rural landscapes, beaches and coves along the way to Paihia, an excellent base for exploring the Bay of Islands.

If time allows, take a detour along the Tutukaka Coast (2h30 from Auckland) to discover its many bays (Whale Bay, Sandy Bay). Diving enthusiasts can stay overnight here for the chance to explore the Poor Knights Islands. This remarkable island group, 23 kilometres off the Tutukaka coast, is an internationally renowned marine reserve. Jacques Cousteau ranked this dive site among the top 10 in the world. This volcanic island has much to offer, and its underwater fauna is extraordinary. A site that divers will particularly appreciate.

On arrival in Paihia, lunch on your own and check-in at your hotel, before taking the ferry (at your own expense) to the picturesque village of Russell. On the programme: a visit to the historic Treaty House at Waitangi, which marks the birth of New Zealand as a nation. It was here that English settlers and the Māori people signed an agreement of peace and cohabitation.

Nearby, you also have the option of visiting the Pompallier Mission. This is the only surviving building of the French Catholic mission established in the Western Pacific at the time. As well as being a witness to the birth of the New Zealand nation, Pompallier stands as testimony to the extensive French influence in New Zealand.

Return ferry to Paihia (at your own expense).

DOUBTLESS BAY
Morning dedicated to exploring the Bay of Islands on a 4-hour cruise. You will sail among 144 islands and islets, and discover the Hole in the Rock, the region’s emblematic natural archway. Located off Cape Brett, the Hole in the Rock has been carved out by wind and waves over time. It is a remarkable natural phenomenon. The cruise is also a good opportunity to spot local wildlife — you will likely have the chance to see dolphins.

Early afternoon, drive to Doubtless Bay along the west side of the island. The road passes orchards and stalls selling seasonal fruit. Watch also for signs pointing to artists’ studios — potters and painters — that have given this region something of an artistic reputation.

You will pass through Kerikeri, home to art galleries, cafés, vineyards, gourmet food shops, several golf courses and historic sites such as the Stone Store and the Mission House.

Along the way, Whangaroa Bay is a haven for big-game fishing. Further north, you will come to the white sand and clear water of Doubtless Bay. Sailing, sea kayaking, horse riding and golf are among the other activities available around Doubtless Bay.

OMAPERE
This morning, we suggest a choice of activities:
– You can make your own way to Cape Reinga lighthouse, at the north-western tip of the Aupouri Peninsula, at the very top of the North Island.

The name of the cape comes from the Māori word “reinga”, meaning “the underworld”. Another Māori name for this place is “Te Rerenga Wairua”, meaning “the place of leaping-off for spirits”. Both refer to the Māori belief that the souls of the dead travel to the cape to pass into the afterlife.

– We can also arrange a day excursion to Ninety Mile Beach, departing from Kaitaia, the region’s main town. You will discover an endless, deserted beach and the giant sand dunes of the Te Paki reserve. There will also be an opportunity to try sandboarding for a dose of adrenaline. Finally, you will head to Cape Reinga, the spiritual home of New Zealand.

– Alternatively, you may choose to stay at the resort to relax.

This afternoon, you will take an off the beaten track road towards the Hokianga region, crossing Herekino Forest. You can take a walk along the Kaitaia Walkway.

In Kohukohu you will find a number of fine historic buildings. A ferry (paid locally) crosses the bay to Rawene, an ideal stop for coffee and a little shopping.

A little further on lie the two charming towns of Opononi and Omapere on the shores of Hokianga Harbour. You can try dune surfing, and should not leave the region without a walk through Waipoua Forest, home to some of New Zealand’s largest kauri trees — including Tane Mahuta, probably the biggest tree you will ever see in your life.

AUCKLAND
Today, drive back to Auckland. Depending on your departure schedule, you can make your way back to Auckland at your own pace.

Near Dargaville, you will find the Kai Iwi Lakes. These striking lakes, surrounded by sand dunes, are popular for camping, swimming, fishing and kayaking. A short detour to Kaiwaka, a village known for its Dutch cheeses, is well worth it.

Further south, you will reach Wellsford, heading towards Helensville. The small hill road offers superb views over Kaipara Harbour and the surrounding farmland. At Kumeu, head towards Waitakere and enjoy the scenic road through the Waitakere Ranges.
Arrival in Auckland, return of your rental vehicle, and return flight.

In summary:
– 1 night in Auckland at a luxury boutique hotel
– 1 night in Paihia at a luxury B&B
– 1 night in the Bay of Islands at a luxury resort
– 1 night in Hokianga at a luxury hotel
