The spirit of the journey to Bazaruto

Welcome to the Bazaruto archipelago, Mozambique: a little-known sanctuary of serenity, surrounded by turquoise waters and set among five small tropical islands with idyllic beaches. Here, time seems to have stopped, freezing the sand dunes as they plunge into the Indian Ocean.

Azura Benguerra, a luxury lodge at the heart of nature

Your stay takes place at Azura Benguerra, on Benguerra Island, reached by helicopter from Vilanculos, flying over sandbanks, dhows and dolphins. The lodge has only around twenty beachfront villas, each with a private pool and terrace, blending modern design with traditional Mozambican art. The near-deserted white sand beach is just steps away. At the table, freshly caught fish and Mozambican cuisine with Portuguese influences.

Leisure, diving and unspoilt nature

Lazing on the silky sand, snorkelling, island tours by Land Rover, sunset dhow cruises: the days unfold at the ocean's pace. For an extra charge, you can choose scuba diving, fishing, kayaking, sailing, a picnic on a deserted sandbank, or an excursion to Pansy Island.

Underwater, the coral reefs are intact and shelter turtles, dolphins, dugongs and humpback whales (from July to October). On the island, shifting dunes, freshwater lakes and wetlands host migratory birds and small mammals.

A concrete commitment to local communities

Built by hand by the local community and co-managed with them, Azura employs over 200 people, 76% of whom are islanders. Its charitable organisation, the Rainbow Fund, built the island's school and health clinic. A fine spirit in a fine setting!

Thanks to our trusted partnership with Azura, this beach stay can easily be combined with a safari in southern Africa (direct flight from Kruger), with a safari at Gorongosa, or with another beach stop in Mozambique.

AZURA BENGUERRA, BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO
It begins with a helicopter flight to reach Benguerra Island, off the coast of Vilanculos, in the Bazaruto archipelago.

Sandbanks, turquoise waters, dolphins, dhows — the scenery is striking.

Set on a fine beach on Benguerra Island, in the Bazaruto archipelago, Azura Benguerra offers the charm of a remote retreat in complete harmony with nature.
You will stay here for 6 or 7 nights in a beach villa.

Surrounded by lush vegetation, the roughly twenty luxury beachfront villas each have a private pool and terrace. They offer excellent comfort, blending modern chic design with traditional Mozambican art.
The near-deserted white sand beach is just steps away.

Freshly caught fish and exotic Portuguese-influenced cuisine make for inventive, varied meals. The chefs have inherited the local cultural blend.

A communal pool is also available to guests.

Azura has a Beach Club, 1km from the lodge’s main beach, for a change of scenery.
You can spend your days lounging at the beach bar or by the pool facing the ocean, sampling inventive Mozambican cuisine or mixing your own cocktails.
The Peri-Peri Beach Club offers a range of activities, such as outdoor cinema on certain evenings, personalised seafood grills, and a Spa pavilion for African-themed massages.

Many activities are centred around the ocean.
The following activities are included by the lodge: snorkelling, island tours by Land Rover, sunset dhow cruise.
Other guided activities are available at extra cost: scuba diving (PADI), fishing, full-day excursions (Pansy Island recommended), kayaking, sailing, a picnic on a deserted sandbank, horse riding, a day of sightseeing in Vilanculos.

Benguerra is a sandy island with spectacular shifting dunes and varied habitats sheltering exotic and endemic species. Freshwater lakes, forest and wetlands shelter crocodiles, migratory and resident birds, and small mammals.
In the Indian Ocean, the coral reefs are stunning and intact. Turtles, whales, dolphins and rare dugongs are regularly seen, along with shoals of multicoloured tropical fish.

The lodge works closely with the development of the island, in partnership with the people of Benguerra (over 200 employees, 76% of whom are local islanders trained by Azura, and 94% Mozambican). A fine spirit in a fine setting!

Azura Benguerra
