Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customizable

Country

Islande

Suggested duration

7 days / 6 nights

Ideal periods

June to September

The spirit of the journey

Leave the busy roads behind to explore the Icelandic Highlands, where the island reveals its rawest and most spectacular face. Along the tracks, the landscapes shift: rhyolite mountains in striking colours, volcanic expanses, hot springs and fumaroles compose an almost surreal setting.

Strikingly designed lodges facing the Hekla volcano

Sleeping in the mirrored houses of ÖÖD Hekla Horizon means experiencing Iceland through vast glass façades: mountains, lava fields and endless horizons, with Hekla as a backdrop. Further on, in the Golden Circle, Torfhús Retreat blends authentic Icelandic style with eco-conscious luxury, its chalets built from local stone and turf inspired by the Viking farm of Stöng. Along the way, a stop at the Kerið crater, a caldera holding a turquoise lake.

Kerlingarfjöll: base camp for the Highlands

Highland Base is the starting point for exploring Kerlingarfjöll, a haven for adventure seekers. Geothermal bathing, hiking, and, depending on the season and conditions, Super Jeep excursions into more remote territories: every detour reveals new panoramas.

An example of a 7-day tailor-made journey, ideally organized from June to September (when the Highlands are accessible), off the beaten track, at the heart of a mineral, powerful and deeply wild Iceland.

LANDMANNALAUGAR, at the heart of the coloured mountains

Reaching Landmannalaugar is already an adventure in itself: the tracks crossing the Highlands gradually lead into a more remote, mineral and silent Iceland.
An extraordinary landscape, where the colours of the mountains meet Iceland’s volcanic power.

Landmannalaugar

At the heart of the Highlands, Landmannalaugar is best discovered on foot, amid coloured mountains, lava fields and steaming valleys.
Depending on what you’re after, follow the trails crossing the Laugahraun lava field or climb the summits of Brennisteinsalda and Bláhnúkur, from where the eye takes in the striking shades of the rhyolite mountains. The more adventurous can walk part of the famous Laugavegur trail, while photographers will find exceptional ground here.

And after the hike, nothing beats slipping into the waters of a natural hot spring, outdoors, facing the mountains. A simple and unforgettable experience, at the heart of a still deeply wild Iceland.

STAYING IN AN UNUSUAL LODGE

In Iceland, accommodation is sometimes an integral part of the journey. Sleeping in an unusual dwelling, such as the ÖÖD houses, means choosing total immersion in the Icelandic landscapes.

With their wide glass façades, these contemporary refuges seem to dissolve into nature, offering a constant view over the mountains, lava fields and the vastness of the sky. From the bed or the outdoor hot tub, one can watch the light shift, the midnight sun in summer or, with a bit of luck, the northern lights in winter.

An intimate interlude, between design, nature and disconnection.

Ööd Hekla Horizon

At the heart of the spectacular landscapes of southern Iceland, the mirror-clad houses of ÖÖD Hekla Horizon blend discreetly into nature. All around, mountains, lava fields and endless horizons set the scene, with the majestic Hekla volcano as a backdrop.

THE KERIÐ CRATER

The Kerið crater reveals an impressive volcanic caldera, holding a lake with turquoise waters and surrounded by steep, reddish walls.

Formed around 3,000 years ago, Kerið is one of the most accessible sites for discovering Icelandic volcanic geology. A path runs around the rim of the crater, offering superb panoramas, while another descends to the edge of the lake for a closer look at the rock’s coloured strata.

The contrast between the deep blue of the water, the red hues of the volcanic rock and the green moss covering the surroundings makes for a particularly photogenic landscape, especially when the light softens at the end of the day.

KERLINGARFJÖLL

A short detour from the classic routes also reveals more secluded sites, such as the turquoise waters of Brúarfoss. The region lends itself to a range of experiences: bathing in geothermal waters, Icelandic horse riding, hiking, or watching the northern lights during the long winter nights.

To go further, Super Jeep excursions into the Highlands allow, depending on the season and conditions, access to more remote territories.
