The spirit of the journey

Big cats are invariably associated with Africa. True enough — but this overlooks the richness of the Indian subcontinent, and India in particular, home to the greatest number of felid species on Earth: tigers, leopards, lions, snow leopards, and fifteen of the roughly forty wild cat species recorded worldwide today.
Of course, the Bengal tiger is the most iconic, and always elusive. But alongside the snow leopard, there is an animal that is even harder to spot: the melanistic leopard — in other words, the black panther.

This journey takes you to Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, where a young black panther has recently been sighted, then on to Nagarhole National Park, which is also home to a few black panthers.

And if Bagheera doesn't show up, we are confident that the beauty of these two still little-visited parks, along with their varied wildlife, will leave a lasting impression.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve rose to fame about a decade ago thanks to exceptional tiger sightings. In recent years, Tadoba has also become the territory of a black panther — a melanistic leopard that has settled near the lake, making sightings here all the more exciting.

Parc national de Tadoba

Le parc national de Tadoba se trouve dans le district de Chandrapur au nord-est du Maharashtra. Créé en 1955 avec une surface de 116 km2, et augmenté avec les 508 km2 du sanctuaire de vie sauvage de Andhrani, le parc de Tadoba est surnommé "le joyau de Vidharba".

Le parc comporte plusieurs zones aux habitats très différents. Un très grand lac est peuplé par de nombreux rapaces qui y trouvent leur nourriture, et même les crocodiles sont présents. Plusieurs prairies permettent aux herbivores de s'épanouir. Les chitals occupent ces lieux. Les gaurs sont facilement visibles à Tadoba ainsi que des sambars, peu farouches. Les tigres et les léopards se trouvent en nombre important. L'observation des tigres est presque assurée pour peu que l'on y passe plusieurs jours. Bien souvent on est seul, contrairement à d'autres endroits.

Ce parc possède beaucoup d'ours lippus et une nombreuse population de dholes. Tadoba est encore méconnu du public. Moins prestigieux et moins fréquenté que ses voisins, il a su garder son authenticité. Vous y serez très peu gênés par la proximité d'autres jeeps.

Faisant partie de la réserve de biosphère de Nilgiri qui couvre une superficie de 5 522 km 2 dans les États du sud du Tamil Nadu, du Kerala et du Karnataka, Kabini abrite la plus grande congrégation d'éléphants d'Asie dans le monde. Karnataka se vantant de la plus forte population de tigres du pays, ces jungles sont le paradis de tous les passionnés de la faune.
Kabini, cependant, a connu beaucoup de succès en raison des grandes observations du léopard mélanique. Le parc est également idéal pour voir des gaurs, des dholes, des crocodiles, des loutres et une espèce de macaque différente des deux autres parcs appelés Bonnet Macaque.
