Arctic Norway: 3-day expedition in search of orcas and 3 nights at a lodge

Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customisable

Country

Norvège

Suggested duration

8 days / 7 nights

Ideal periods

From October to mid-January

The spirit of the journey in Norway

For three days, leave dry land behind for an expedition at the heart of Arctic Norway, in search of orcas and humpback whales.
From late October to mid-January, huge shoals of herring draw these cetaceans into the waters of the High North, sometimes in groups of several dozen individuals.

Three days at sea, to the rhythm of the cetaceans

On board, the days are organised around searching for them: a blow at the surface, a fin on the horizon, and sometimes a whole pod surging up. When conditions allow, you can approach the orcas by inflatable boat, wearing a dry suit, and enter the water to swim or snorkel nearby, always with respect for the animals and their environment.

Sightings depend on the weather and the presence of herring: here, it is nature, not the itinerary, that decides.
In the evening, the boat anchors in a bay, and in season, the night sometimes ends under the northern lights.

And then comes the comfort of a lodge deep in nature

After this unforgettable experience, the journey shifts pace. You spend three nights at Sorrisniva Lodge, in Finnmark, on the banks of the Alta River, between contemplation, wellbeing and Arctic landscapes: dinner at Maku Restaurant, sauna, outdoor jacuzzi and large windows looking out over the river. Depending on the season, set off by dog sled, snowmobile or snowshoe, discover Sámi culture or visit the Igloo Hotel, rebuilt every year.
Another way to discover Northern Norway.

Polar adventure and Scandinavian art of living combined: an 8-day tailor-made journey, fully customisable, to discover Arctic Norway differently.

On arrival in the High North, you take time to settle in and discover the landscapes of Arctic Norway. One night to ease gently into the atmosphere of the journey, before leaving land behind.

Early the next morning, the real adventure begins. You board for three days of expedition in search of orcas and whales. From the deck, the horizon becomes your field of observation: a blow at the surface, a fin outlined in the distance, and sometimes a whole pod surging up in waters rich with herring.

Nager avec les orques en hiver

Expedition voyages to observe orcas and whales, 3 days and 6 days.

From late October to mid-January, huge shoals of herring draw hundreds of cetaceans to northern Norway. Depending on the day, you may observe orcas and humpback whales, sometimes in groups of several dozen individuals.

You live aboard a boat throughout the expedition and set out each day in search of them. When conditions allow, you can also enter the water to swim or snorkel close to the cetaceans, always with respect for their environment.

Sightings naturally depend on weather conditions and the presence of herring. When conditions align, several swims may be offered in the course of a single day.

A typical day on board

Wake-up at 7:30am
Breakfast from 8:00 to 8:30am
The boat leaves port around 9:00am.
You head into the fjord in search of orcas.
Some days you spot the animals immediately and can start swimming right away.
Other days, it takes hours to find the orcas. Once the orcas are located, you move to the small boat (a rigid inflatable equipped with a drysuit) and keep your camera ready for the action.
You typically stay in the inflatable for two to three hours, then return to the main boat for hot soup, a coffee break and lunch.
At dusk, the boat heads to the nearest bay or harbour to spend the night.
Dinner on board at 6:00pm, followed by a good night’s sleep, rocked by the sea and, in season, the northern lights.

After three days at sea, you return to dry land, carrying memories that will stay with you. The sea gradually fades behind you as the road leads you through wild landscapes of boreal forest, snow-capped ridges and vast Arctic expanses.

The contrast is striking: after the movement and adventure of the expedition, you reach a high-end lodge set deep in nature, where comfort and wellbeing take over. A new, more intimate chapter begins, to fully savour the final days of this journey through Arctic Norway.

Sorrisniva Lodge
