Lofoten Islands by car: fishing villages and an unusual lighthouse

Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customizable

Country

Norvège

Suggested duration

13 days / 12 nights

Ideal periods

From March to November

The spirit of the journey

The journey begins facing the sea, on the island of Sommarøy, off Tromsø: mountains rise straight out of the water, and white sand beaches already offer a taste of the Arctic. The road then heads towards the Lofoten Islands, between fjords, fishing villages and small harbours, where cod-drying racks and rorbuer — the traditional red cabins — tell a story closely tied to the sea.

A road trip along the way

Along this road trip through the Lofoten Islands, every bend reveals a new setting: sharp peaks, turquoise waters, wild beaches, and coastal roads suspended between land and ocean. You drive from Svolvær to Reine, moving from island to island over long bridges and brief ferry crossings, stopping whenever the mood strikes: a fishing village, a beach where surfers take on the North Atlantic.

Depending on the season, a boat trip can punctuate the adventure, with the chance to observe whales in their natural environment. From March to November, the light shifts and shapes each stage of the journey: the midnight sun in summer, the first northern lights in autumn.

A lighthouse at the end of the world

Then the road gives way to the ocean. After a short boat crossing from Bø, you reach Little Island, a small private island where the former lighthouse watches over the vastness, surrounded by cliffs and Arctic winds. You discover its history before taking possession of this truly exceptional address, with the sea as your only horizon.
Here, time no longer matters. It is a genuine pause from the world, where one comes to slow down to the rhythm of the Atlantic.

An example of a fully tailor-made 13-day journey, conceived as a progression through traditional fishing villages, the emblematic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands, and an unusual pause at the end of the world.

On arrival, you collect your car and set off towards the Norwegian fjords. Gradually, the mountains close in, water becomes ever-present, and the road threads its way between islets, ridges, and sea inlets.

After the first few kilometres, you reach a small island connected to the mainland by road. Pale sand beaches, turquoise waters, and peaks plunging into the sea create a strikingly bright landscape for this latitude.

In the morning, you get back behind the wheel and leave behind the island landscapes of the first stage. The road follows the coastline, between steep ridges and open views over Arctic waters, before giving way to a ferry crossing. Gradually, the outlines of the famous Lofoten Islands come into view, marking the start of a new stage of the road trip.

Once in the Lofoten Islands, the road becomes the best way to grasp the full singularity of the archipelago. It winds between steep mountains and jagged shorelines, running past small harbours and through fishing villages where colourful houses stand out against the deep waters of the fjords.

Heading towards Svolvær and then Reine, the landscapes gain further character. Sharp peaks appear around each bend, while the sea remains ever-present. A first immersion in the emblematic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands, to be discovered freely along the way.

What if we paused time for a moment?
The road continues until the land seems to gradually give way to the ocean. After a short crossing, the lighthouse comes into view, standing alone against the immensity, as if placed there to watch over the end of the world.

Steeped in history, this place tells of another era, when lighthouses guided ships through the unpredictable waters of the High North. You discover its history before taking possession of this truly exceptional address.

Here, time no longer matters. The sea becomes your horizon, the lighthouse your refuge, and the world suddenly feels far away.

Little Island
