The Hajar Mountains, literally “mountains of stone”, stretch over more than 300 kilometers, from the Musandam Peninsula in the north to Ras al Hadd, a coastal village recognized as the easternmost point of the Sultanate of Oman, and also the first place in the Arab world where the sun rises each day. This mountain range, which runs through inland Oman, is one of the country's main attractions, thanks to its spectacular landscapes and its inhabitants, who have adapted to challenging living conditions.
Among the most notable peaks of the Hajar Mountains are Jebel Shams, “the mountain of the sun”, which rises to 3,009 meters and is Oman's highest point, and Jebel Akhdar, “the green mountain”, famous for its lush vegetation in an otherwise very arid country.
