Located 23 km southeast of Entebbe, on the waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1998 to provide a safe refuge for orphaned chimpanzees rescued from poaching and captivity by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
The island, covered in tropical forest, forms a preserved natural habitat where these intelligent primates roam freely within a fenced environment. Visitors can observe the chimpanzees during daily feeding sessions, from viewing platforms that offer a unique proximity to these fascinating animals.
Ngamba Island plays a key role in chimpanzee rehabilitation and protection, while raising awareness about the conservation of this threatened species. A visit to the island is an immersive, educational experience, ideal for understanding the challenges of primate conservation in Africa.
