The Spitsbergen archipelago — known to Norwegians as Svalbard — is the only polar territory that is both geographically and politically European. It is a true jewel!

Here, silence wraps around you, and the wind carries you along.
Thousands of migratory birds, walruses, whales, and the polar bear, lord of the pack ice, serve as a reminder of just how fragile this polar land is.

Budget to plan for

The best way to discover the Svalbard archipelago remains the cruise. It allows you to explore this polar region in depth and offers the flexibility required by Arctic travel conditions.
There are many cruises on very different ships, which will not all offer the same capacity, comfort or service. Some cruises may also follow a wider itinerary, even taking you as far as Greenland, for instance.
For a ten-day cruise around Spitsbergen, plan for a minimum of €6,000 per person.

Expert advice

Plan for at least a week for a cruise around Spitsbergen. Naturally, the longer you stay, the more opportunities you will have to observe the wildlife and take in these remarkable landscapes.
If you choose a cruise that circles the entire archipelago or continues on to Greenland, allow between 10 and 20 days. Note, however, that cruise itineraries always remain flexible, as travel in polar territory is subject to extreme technical and weather conditions, and decisions are made by the captain in real time, according to the day’s possibilities. Be ready for adventure!
