Cape Horn – Tierra del Fuego in a Graphic Novel

Ushuaïa – Tierra del Fuego – at the dawn of the 20th century

A pivotal era for this mythical region at the end of the world, where the life of the Yamana Amerindians who inhabit it is about to be upended by the arrival of Westerners.

The plot of this graphic novel brings together English missionaries seeking to convert the last Yamanas, Argentine soldiers posted to this frontier outpost, members of a French scientific expedition, adventurers and gold prospectors…

Beyond the quality of the realistic artwork, evocative of the atmosphere and landscapes of Tierra del Fuego, and the story that weaves together the fates of complex, compelling characters, what makes this graphic novel worthwhile is its grounding in historical fact — even if that means some passages can be fairly violent. The author, Christian Perrissin, doesn’t adhere strictly to historical events but draws on real figures, such as the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges — who wrote a dictionary of the Yamana language — or the sailor Joshua Slocum — the first person to sail solo around the world…

We recommend this series, whose fourth and final volume will be released in mid-August.
