Anyone who has set out to explore the Pantanal, that extraordinary Brazilian wetland crisscrossed by endless meanders, will have felt the pull of emotion before the brazen ballet of giant otters, the colour and call of the hyacinth macaw, the wild hunting of yacare caimans, the frantic flight of the hummingbird, or the antics of the ever-present capuchin monkeys.
Yet however wide the explorer’s eyes grow at so much beauty gathered in one place, they remain restless, scanning every corner of the vast green and watery expanse before them, wary of missing the discovery of a lifetime, afraid of missing The encounter.
The encounter with the jaguar.
Fleeting, swift, distant though it may be, this encounter must happen. There is no other way.
To come here, to this magical yet secluded place, this extraordinary sanctuary of protected flora and fauna, and not see — or merely “glimpse” — his majesty the jaguar would be a genuine waste, so much does the lord of these lands, the emblem of the Pantanal, the mythical animal of many civilisations, embody power, strength and elegance…
…But also great discretion! So, patience is required…
For everyone else, here are a few images from the latest film by Ronan Fournier.
