In Search of a Hidden Eden in Australia

Bamurru Plains – a hidden Eden in Australia

The light aircraft takes off from Darwin, and we fly over several wild expanses on our way to Bamurru Plains. A makeshift airstrip appears amid the surrounding wildlife and vegetation. A 4×4 picks us up, and after 15-20 minutes we catch sight of our lodge.

I discover Bamurru Plains in all its splendour and am overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it. Forest buffalo and wallabies give us a theatrical welcome; it’s time to disconnect. The watchword here is the present moment. Grounding oneself in this emblematic landscape and giving the mind a chance to become one with it. It’s an invitation to connect with nature at the heart of Top End’s coastal floodplains.

Both African and American influences run through this place. 4×4 and river safaris put Africa in the spotlight. During the rainy season, the plain fills with water, and by airboat it’s possible to go in search of the reptiles that inhabit this territory, not unlike the Everglades in Florida.
During the 4×4 safari, the naturalist stops at observation towers and explains the surrounding flora and fauna. Wild horses, buffalo, giant termite mounds, nature stretching as far as the eye can see.
A few steps from here, Kakadu National Park invites you to set foot on Aboriginal land. Ethnic encounters and cultural insight through the discovery of rock art.

All this surrounding nature encourages you to slow down and settle in.

« For instance, the toilet paper rolls are kept in an iron bucket, and in mine there was a frog »

Inside the lodge, the decor resembles a subtle, pared-back cabinet of curiosities where elegance meets simplicity.
Exclusive access to 300 km² of wild expanses and savannah along the Mary River, on the edge of Kakadu National Park. The abundance of birds and wildlife makes this an exceptional place for a unique experience discovering remote, magnificent nature.

The cuisine is an explosion of flavours. The chef takes pleasure in surprising us.
