KIGALI
Spread across several hills, the Rwandan capital is the first stop on your journey. Kigali has overcome its dark past to become one of the most appealing and safest cities in Africa, and one of Rwanda’s sources of pride.
You’ll stop here for its culture: the genocide memorial. There you’ll discover Rwanda’s history from the pre-colonial era to the 1994 genocide, whose memorial lists the 250,000 victims buried there, as well as the way the country has had to come to terms with this terrible past.
A true journey back in time that brings with it many emotions.
A harrowing history, yet one full of hope.
AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Your journey continues in one of Africa’s oldest national parks.
You’ll reach Akagera National Park by helicopter, offering a first glimpse of Rwanda’s landscapes from the air.
Bordered by numerous lakes, Akagera Park holds one of the densest concentrations of waterbirds on the continent and will take you through one of East Africa’s most picturesque savannahs — plains, forests, lakes, marshes and low grassy mountains.
Your safaris here will be exceptional.
The landscape shifts between gentle hills and the lowland swamps and waterways.
The park holds one of Africa’s highest densities of hippopotamuses, very large crocodiles, and numerous other species including elephants, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes — among them one of Africa’s largest, the Cape eland.
You’ll spend 3 nights at Magashi Tented Camp, a Wilderness Safaris property opened in May 2019, with six spacious, airy tents offering sweeping views over Lake Rwanyakazinga.
Created in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and African Parks, the Wilderness Safaris camp is committed to promoting authentic, sustainable ecotourism in Rwanda and to conserving the country’s last protected savannah ecosystem, home to species such as the black rhinoceros and the rare and elusive shoebill stork.
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
This is the moment of your long-awaited encounter with the mountain gorillas, in Volcanoes National Park, which you’ll reach by helicopter.
No sound, no movement, holding your breath… you’ll experience an intense moment searching for these majestic primates.
Suddenly, a rustle of leaves catches your attention — you make out one eye, then two, then a paw, and finally the whole gorilla stands before you.
A memorable sight!
The emotion is such that it becomes indescribable.
And to crown it all, your 2-night stay at Bisate Lodge will make the experience even more remarkable. Set in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, it offers spectacular views of the summits of Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi, rising above the Afro-alpine forests.
