CAFAYATE

You will drive through Los Cardones National Park, a refuge for numerous plant and animal species.
QUEBRADA DE LAS FLECHAS – COLOMÉ – MOLINOS – CACHI – LOS CARDONES NATIONAL PARK
Pick up your vehicle and drive in the morning toward the villages of Molinos and Colomé.
Crossing of the magnificent Quebrada de las Flechas in the morning light, a striking geological formation shaped like arrows set within an almost lunar landscape. At Colomé you can visit the space dedicated to the artistic work of James Turrell.
Drive toward Cachi along the artisans’ route. The region was densely populated before the arrival of the Spanish, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with archaeological sites. The archaeological museum on Cachi’s main square bears witness to this rich past, still carried on today through local folk art. Take time to wander the streets of this picturesque village.
For walkers, a trek with a local guide from Seclantas toward the Quebrada de Acsibi: about 1 hour of driving followed by roughly 3 hours of walking into a canyon of increasingly surprising shapes, a striking gift from Mother Earth that local communities have long used for their ceremonies. Moderate difficulty.
Continue on to Los Cardones National Park, designated a “National Park” in 1996 to protect its natural wealth. This remarkable park spans nearly 65,000 hectares between 2,600 m and 5,300 m in altitude and harbours the main Andean ecosystems. Its name comes from the candelabra cactus, or cardón, which grows abundantly throughout the park.
As with the flora, the fauna here is remarkably diverse. Numerous mammals live here — Andean deer, grey foxes, armadillos, weasels, chinchillas and even puma. The most commonly sighted birds are Andean condors, parrots, Andean gulls and hummingbirds.
Overnight in Molinos at a small charming hacienda in the village.

SALINAS GRANDES – PURMAMARCA – QUEBRADA DE HUMAHUACA – TILCARA
Ascent into the Andes via the Quebrada del Toro, through which the famous Train to the Clouds passes. Visit the archaeological site of Tastil, the most important pre-Inca urban centre in the region. You will cross the Muñano pass at over 4,000 m before reaching San Antonio de los Cobres, a mining town from which a track leads to the vast white expanse of the Salinas Grandes.
Then descend toward the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to Purmamarca, where you will spend 1 night.
The next day, enjoy the morning light on a walk at the foot of the Paseo de los Colorados, offering the best views of the “Hill of Seven Colours”. Visit the archaeological site of Pukara, stroll through a vibrant Andean market, and stay overnight in Tilcara.
Return to Salta to return your rental vehicle and catch your flight to Iguazu.
