Everyone knows the legendary Panama Canal, a true engineering marvel connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific.
While this passage, a major site in the colonial history of the Americas, remains the country's leading attraction, other riches now contribute to its reputation.
Like most Central American countries, Panama is crossed lengthwise by volcanic ranges.
In Chiriqui province stands the Barù volcano (3,450 meters), a draw for mountain lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike, the latter taking time to savor an arabica in Boquete. Not to mention the legendary and rare Resplendent Quetzal, a delight for birdwatchers.
On the opposite side, the Serranía del Darién extends beyond the Colombian border. This is home to the Wounaan people, who strive to preserve their way of life. It is also one of the most biodiverse regions in Central America. Here, dense primary rainforest shelters threatened species such as jaguars, pumas, tapirs, and spider monkeys. Not to be missed!
Finally, a trip to Panama would not be complete without taking the time to immerse yourself in the crystalline waters of the Bocas del Toro coral archipelago, opening onto the Caribbean Sea. There you can observe a rich marine fauna, including dolphins, sea turtles, and brightly colored fish. Unless you prefer the Pacific coast, in the Pearl Islands or on the highly secluded Isla Palenque.
All these white sand beaches fringed with lush vegetation live up to the image of a tropical paradise.
