Birthplace of the walking safari

Tailor-made trip to Zambia

Zambia remains to this day a wild, little-visited and authentic country. The safari destination par excellence.
Here, Africa reveals itself fully, without restraint, in all its splendour and majesty. Everything it has to offer unfolds: vast protected areas, abundant wildlife, magnificent landscapes, fiery sunsets, dream lodges...
All the elements come together for one of the most captivating and unforgettable safaris in Africa.

The walking safari is the best way to discover the bush. A unique experience, very different from a vehicle-based safari. Immersion in nature is total. The slow pace and the silence required to listen for the slightest sound. Everything combines to generate incredible emotions while awakening our sense of responsibility. A true communion with Zambia's wilderness.

While South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi are the two essential stops, other national parks are equally captivating: Kafue and the Busanga Plains, the Bangweulu wetlands to observe the shoebill stork, or Liuwa Plains with its annual wildebeest migration. And for a first trip to Zambia, it would be hard to miss Victoria Falls, spending a night or two in Livingstone.

The country offers a remarkably rich range of experiences. A single safari in Zambia is unlikely to be enough to satisfy your wishes.

Budget to plan for

Like Botswana, Zambia has opted for limited tourism, favouring quality over quantity. Accommodations are of very high standard, offering an exclusive and intimate experience.
To explore two regions, plan a budget of around €6,000 to €7,000 per person for a week in a charming lodge, and around €8,000 to €9,000 per person for higher-category lodges.
For around ten days across three different regions, plan respectively €9,000 and €11,000–12,000 per person.
These rates vary depending on the season and the lodges selected.

Expert advice

A trip of 8 to 10 days on the ground will allow you to fully explore two parks, such as South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi.
If you wish to add another region such as Kafue, Bangweulu or Liuwa Plains, 3 to 4 additional days are needed – for Victoria Falls, 2 additional days.
It is always best to stay long enough in a park or reserve to truly make the most of it and to take in the surroundings.

Your questions / Our answers

What is the best season to see Victoria Falls from Zambia?

The best period runs from April to June, when the falls are at full flow. Before that, the flow is so powerful that it’s nearly impossible to observe them properly; they’re masked by swirling spray. After August, the flow is very low and parts of the gorges can run dry. However, don’t limit your visit to the Zambian side, as three-quarters of the falls belong to Zimbabwe. The two borders are very close, making it easy to cross over to the Zimbabwean side. Several viewpoints are available there, while on the Zambian side, you get to observe the falls up close. The flow remains strong for longer on the Zimbabwean side. So if you’re travelling to Zambia between July and November, it’s best to head straight for the Zimbabwean side.

What safari activities are available in Zambia?

Zambia offers a range of safari formats: walking safaris, 4×4 game drives, canoe and boat safaris.
Hot-air balloon flights over wildlife are also possible in the Busanga Plains.
A genuine variety of ways to experience the bush.

Which parks to visit in Zambia?

Two parks are essential in Zambia: South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi.
Choose South Luangwa for its high-quality walking and 4×4 safaris, and combine it with Lower Zambezi, for canoe safaris on the Zambezi River, walking and 4×4 safaris in landscapes that complement those of South Luangwa.
If you have a bit more time and budget, head to Kafue, particularly the Busanga Plains in the north of the park, known for their vast grassy floodplains stretching to the horizon. Sunsets there are exceptional.
If you have never seen Victoria Falls, extend your stay with two nights in Livingstone, ideally at a lodge on the banks of the Zambezi.
For birding enthusiasts, the Bangweulu Wetlands offer the chance to encounter a legendary bird that seems to come from another world: the shoebill.
And if you are looking for an exceptional, exclusive experience, travel to the Liuwa floodplains in November, when spectacular cloud formations build as storms form, creating dramatic skies, and, with the arrival of the rains, carpets of flowers appear across the plains. This is also when large herds of wildebeest migrate across the plains from neighbouring Angola.
